The advent of the Second World War saw Ted again doing his duty for King and Country, this time in the Sixth (Dallington) Battalion of the Nineteenth (Rother) Division of the Sussex Home Guard. Fortunately, all of Ted’s sons were too young to be called up.
Ted finally made his fame and fortune by starting a cattle carrying business. This subsequently became the family business with 2 of his sons carrying on the trade. Indeed it can be said that this historically had been the family business all along as Ted’s great-uncle Richard (1812-1878) had been ‘Carter to the Earl of Ashburnham’!

The family prospered, Ted acquiring several properties in the surrounding villages. Several of the sons went off to do their National Service. Eventually all the children moved away, starting their own families.

Lillian, his wife, died in 1963, whilst Ted managed his three score years and ten, passing away in 1978.

Ted’s youngest daughter, Cynthia, still lives in Pleasure House Cottage, the cottage that Ted rented from the Ashburnham Estate, maintaining a known Hobden presence in Ashburnham of nearly 250 years.
